Life on the Rez: The Indians dominate Wyoming hoop
If you want to win a WY State Title, you have to go through The Chiefs
Low life expectancy. Abnormally high incidents of alcohol and drug abuse. Nation-leading high school drop-out rates. The poorest zip codes in the US. Lots of violence, tons of missing women, rampant homelessness. Name it and the Indians suffer from it.
The boys and girls high school basketball teams at Wyoming Indian High School, though, show no signs of disadvantage.
The boys claim 12 state championship titles and the girls boast six. They play what locals tell me is “Rez Ball:” they get it and go, uptempo, looking to outscore you. And that they do.
The teams produce college basketball players, and even the first drafted WNBA player in Tahnee Robinson.
The kids live with their families in trailers provided by the USG. There are portable hoops in nearly every driveway. Basketball is religion on Wind River, plain and simple.
Full Court Peace provides outdoor court repair, basketballs, new hoops, tournament entry fees and general funding for the needs of youth basketball programs.
Just imagine what the Natives will accomplish with this newfound support. Even without it, they’ve been unstoppable.
